First, this Friday the 21st at 2:30 pm, the PTA will be holding Upper Grade Field Day/Jr. Olympics tryouts. This is for 4-6 graders that want to participate in the city wide Jr. Olympics this April. Information was sent home last month, along with permission slips. If your child would like to try out on Friday, please fill out a permission slip. They are available in the school office. We are in need of volunteers to assist on the 21st to help keep time and scores of the students participating, as well as set up and take down. If you are available, or have an older child that can help, please contact me or show up on Friday at 2pm for all the details. Finally, coaches are needed for the following events (once tryouts are complete and teams formed): running long jump, softball toss, and hoops per minute. Practices are held once a week, either after school or if you can come during recess or lunch times to coach. If a parent volunteers to coach, your child (if in grades 4-6) will automatically be placed on a team. For further details, please contact me at anytime.
Last week was our monthly board meeting and here is a recap of what took place:
Guest Speaker and certified personal trainer, Dyne Kniseley, presented a program for a healthier you. Below are all the details for those that are interested in attending.
Next the board discussed Friday's Super Bowl Family Event. All I can say is that it was a fun night. We never held an event like that before, and even though there were a few glitches, it was wonderful. Thank you Misty Dawson and Jen Rosenstein, our membership team, for putting it all together. Plus a shout out to all their helpers who served pizza, adjusted the movie, and made countless bags of popcorn. You are all amazing. Finally a super huge thank you to all the families that joined PTA giving 17 out of 18 classes we have 100% membership. Madera's PTA is strong because of you.
Next we discussed the upcoming HSA Awards. What are the HSA Awards you ask? This is when all the schools in Simi Valley honor those volunteers that go above and beyond for our kids. You may have noticed the plaques hanging in the school office naming past winners. There are four categories: VSP - Very Special person (somebody that does nice things for our children and school), HSA - Honorary Service Award (somebody that is always doing something for our children and the community), CSA - Continuous Service Award (somebody who has already won an HSA and continues to do those extras that make our school great), and finally the Golden Oak (somebody that has been volunteering and doing so much for our children for many years). Nomination forms will be available in the school office sometime next week or you can contact Maria Henderson at email@example.com to nominate somebody you find deserving.
Next we discussed canceling the Music Van due to lack of volunteers. As much as we would love to host this we cannot do it alone. If parents are still interested in us having the Music Van we will try and reschedule it for the spring.
The Simi Valley Education Foundation is offering money to schools that go out and ice skate at the Iceoplex on certain days and times. Information went home in last week's Messenger. You must have a flyer to participate. Flyers are available in the school office with all the details. For every paid admission from Madera the SVEF will give us back $1. Doesn't sound like much, but it does add up.
Variety Show is coming. For more information regarding rehearsals, please contact Diane Oquist at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Finally, the nominating committee reported they had found the following PTA members to run for the following positions on next year's PTA Executive Board: President - Ashley Watkins
1st VP Programs - Cammie Brinkman
2nd VP Ways and Means - Kristin Tignac
Secretary - Liz Hernandez

3rd VP Membership is the only position that is still open. If anyone is interested in that position, please let me know. Elections will be held in March at our Association Meeting.
